In August 1955, Ben Hogan featured in Sport Illustrated regarding his Secret to fight the hook. No matter what is the secret, I still believe his saying: The answer is in the dirt.

@86supermann There is one aspect of Hogans swing that I personally have’nt heard anyone discuss.A whip and the forces that drive it’s snap is prevelent in Hogans tempo.I have personally tried it and alot of pieces of the puzzle just fall into place.Hogans hook in my opinion was illiminated by an adjustment of the wrist at the top and at the release just before striking the ball.
@chrisopacity yes, the answer is in the dirt. the ground gives you the most power out of anything. the stronger you can connect to the ground, the more balance you will have as well as the ability to create a strong coil.
the feeling i have is like im shoving my right heel into the ground and as well as forward in a clockwise position, with the toes pointing to 1 oclock. this keeps me strongly connected to the ground, which results to my right leg not rotating, and therefore creates good coil
As the club begins to build up speed and the left hip makes the first move down the target line before it turns backward, the width of the stance will hold up just fine. If you have a tendency to lose your balance, your stance might be to narrow. w w w (dot) golferbreak80 (dot) c0m
precisely. folks if you want to feel it turn your right foot so the toe points to 11 o’clock. and keep your knee flex constant. ………. and do that 10,000 times.
I think the secret was the fact that he was such an extremely talented golfer. He was way ahead of his time in most aspects of the game, and an absolute perfectionist.
hogan had a lot of god-given ability. great hand-eye coordination, and abnormally long arms. he wasn’t tall at 5′7″, but with his long arms he had a long swing and kept up distance-wise. the rest of it was just a dogged determination to be the best golfer he could possibly be. i don’t know it that’s something you can coach.
keep in mind, it was the depression. there wasn’t much else to do.
100000% absolutely correct…..well put. And that is Exactly what I do. Its amazing what happens when you practice fundamentally sound technique.
the secret is in the dirt. Hogan said that the secret can be found on his swing at the 18th hole at olympic club in 1955. He slipped during this swing and lost in the playoff.
That swing revealed the torque that hogan had which is similar to the feeling of screwing your right foot into the ground clockwise during the backswing (while not actually moving it). It provides the crucial balance point throughout the swing.
This connection to the ground, atleast how ive read it, is the secret.
hi could you have a look at my golf swing thanks im only 14 years old
OBSESSION
Hogans secret:
1. Get up at sunrise,
2. Hit balls til lunch,
3. Have lunch,
4. Hit more balls til dinner,
5. Chip and put in your room til bed time,
6. Get up next day and repeat.
Funny how Tiger and Ben had the same “secret” move.
B3rb; I have been a student of this game for about 43 years and I will remain a student just like every other golfer, young, old, amateur, and pro. Hogan and Moe came close to knowing all. Hell Hogan probably hit a thousand balls in a day sometimes, whereas I hit that in a week. But the golf swing changes over time, so I have tried to simplify it for myself so I can enjoy it more and now I do. And I have a good short game..something that most golfers don’t work at very hard.
B3rb; No I have no delusions of becoming Ben Hogan at age 54…lol…but I have been able to improve greatly(consistency) by simplifying my golf swing down to 2 or 3 swing thoughts. If you already have a good grip and decent alignment, 2 or 3 things is sufficient. And no they don’t worry about their legs but that is a key swing component and muscle memory is involved of course. I try to use a drill where I transfer weight from right to left, it works wonders for timing and power.
ok now you know the secret and hit 1000 balls a week you should become as good as hogan then right? and you added moe into this and the secret is about ben hogan. to be completly honest, all they do is swing, they dont worry about their legs, they let what naturally is supposed to happen, happen.
Final thing I will say here is that it takes dedication and perserverance with your practice. It is really up to the individual to know what works for himself and of course an occasional trip to the golf doc does not hurt. Lastly, I would say no matter your spiritual persuation, it helps to believe in a higher power…the Golfing Gods, if you will.
Actually he did not just mean practice, although that is very important. If you listen to one of Moe Norman’s videos he said he did not play on top of his legs, he played into them. In other words most of the secret is in active legs, even though most pros do not teach this in the modern swing. Other part is to keep the backswing simple and short(compact). But of course you cannot put it together what I am talking about unless you hit a 1000+ golf balls like I do every week.
hogan’s secret will always be a secret.
nobody knows, hogan was a kidder, spoke in short phrases. if you knew him, youknew this
i have spoke with people who knew him well, and kept his company, they telold me different
keep guessing, one hint, laying the club off helped him control.
rich
Don’t you mean flat left wrist? It wasn’t cupped. Look at any of his books. He never says cupped. In fact, look at any of his videos. His left wrist is flat at the top.
he just ment practice. He knew that if he told everyone his secret, that it would make things worst for the average golfer. Everyone wants to hit a draw but him. Took his weakness and made it a strength. Your totally right through, some people dont realize what a divot can show. And, they did not have the technology we have today but there you will see plenty of photos and videos of him on youtube alone never mind what he kept for himself that no one has seen.
what did he mean then? always hit down into the ground?
even though your right, thats not what he ment.
your divot can tell alot about how you swing the club. inside-out, outside-in, shallow/steep planes, whether the clubface is coming down w/ the heel or toe first. back in the day that’s all they had to rely on besides someone else eyes, ball flight pattern and just plain old feel of impact.
So Hogan said he had to get rid of that (unexpected) hook? So instead of doing something else, he kept the same swing, just “cupped” the left wrist. We have a hunch, with today’s technology and all the research that pioneers such as Hogan did) that today he would do that another way.

You have a pic of Toski in there
whats your point, hogan never says what it was….
